A book related job – An illustrator

An illustrator that lights up the writing.

The dictionary meaning of illustration is translated into ‘insertion’ or ‘drawing’. “Insertion” refers to a picture that intervenes between the texts, and “Dohae” refers to a picture that explains it.
The demand for illustrations is on the rise across the industry. Recently, the use of illustration has been expanding for character design, stationery or product design, fashion, video animation, and advertisements. In the field of publications, illustrations are expanding beyond the realm of “insertion” to the realm of writers, and a typical example is picture books. Picture book illustration is the area of the artist who interacts with the text to create a third outcome.

Living as an illustrator.

Active illustrators usually upload their portfolios on their personal homepages or specific gallery sites and work at the request of companies. In other words, you search through this portfolio for pictures needed for any writing or concept. Therefore, efforts are needed to reveal one’s work and personality. In other words, it also means that even if you don’t have a personal connection or private connection, you have an open way to become a writer with your paintings.

In charge of illustrating publications, it takes a process of coordinating opinions with many people, including writers, editors, planners, and designers. Even if it is the same article, each reader can have different opinions and images, so it is difficult to coordinate them and produce results. Editors are also making books while experiencing this process in person. There are definitely times when it’s hard because we don’t agree. ^^

Nevertheless, this process is also the most attractive and thrilling moment throughout the book creation. The moment the pictures in your head were embodied and revealed in front of you, the illustrator was the creator who created a new world in the book. In that respect, picture books sometimes come as works of art. In the world of books written and drawn by the author, readers laugh, cry, and experience healing as much as they want.

If you’re interested in illustrators and picture book writers

Do you think you have to major in art and graduate from art to become an illustrator? But it’s not necessarily. It is more important to meet books that match the individuality expressed in the picture and to communicate and collaborate well. In particular, illustrations related to books require humanities knowledge and sensibility because they must be able to read the meaning of the text and my intention. Those who work as the best illustrators and picture book writers are also great book enthusiasts.

Anyone who has never thought of a career path like “I’m not good at drawing” or “I’ve never learned art”? During art class, you close your mouth and stare at the sketchbook with an angry face? Please instill confidence that such a child can become a painter as much as possible. Peter Reynolds’ “Dot”, “As You Feel”, and “As You Draw” are books that show that the artist’s skills are not “growing” but “not breaking them down.” I recommend teachers and parents read the random pictures on the drawing paper, along with an open mind that recognizes them as works, a feeling of looking at things, praise that encourages them to express freely without prejudice, and children who dream of becoming painters.

Humor, lubricant that attracts the audience.

There is a common saying whenever an education officer requests a class. “Teacher, please make it fun.”
Fun is the number one need of the person in charge of education.

For instructors, humor is not an option, but a necessity.

No matter how well-educated and experienced an instructor is, the audience’s interest drops sharply if he or she lectures dry and hard. In companies, most audiences are often reluctantly attracted to the education center. Of course, the attitude toward education is passive. It is no different from handing over a drink with sleeping pills by delivering the content dryly to such an audience.

A hard lecture is like a desert with endless sand. As there is an oasis in the dry desert, adding an element of humor to my lecture can increase the audience’s immersion and greatly increase lecture satisfaction. The same is true of lectures, just as humor acts as a lubricant in tiring daily life.

Some instructors say this.

“I don’t have a sense of humor by nature. “I’m not confident in making the audience laugh.” It’s perfectly normal. Except for a few special people, not many people have a good sense of humor. At the beginning of the lecture, I also lacked a sense of humor, which was burdensome. However, I realized that these handicaps could be supplemented with some effort. When I was a beginner instructor, I tried hard to develop a sense of humor. I searched the Internet and looked up various humor books, but there was nothing, in particular, to use in lectures. Most of them were childish or based on sex, so if they were used incorrectly, it would have an adverse effect.

However, as I continued to concentrate, I happened to shout “Eureka!” One day, I was watching a TV entertainment program and found a perfect material for lectures. I thought this was it, so I took a note and used it appropriately for the lecture. If you don’t let go of your interest like this, you’ll eventually see it.

Whether on TV, in daily life, or in lectures by other instructors, I can easily find the materials I need. What is important at this time is the attitude of immediately taking notes of the humor. “Hey, it’s fun, but when will you use it?” You can’t just pass by. When memos accumulate and accumulate, they become the secret weapon that I don’t want to show anyone.

When using Funny Situations, thorough rehearsals are essential in advance.

General lecture rehearsals can be done alone by looking in the mirror. But humor is better to experiment with people yourself. This is because there is no guarantee that other people will laugh just because I burst into laughter.

In the past, I was watching the Internet and found a very funny subject and burst into laughter alone. So when I talked about it at a gathering of all my family, the reactions were sharply mixed. Two burst into laughter, but the two complained, “What is that?” The reason is that it is a joke that has passed a long time even after the season. If you use humor that has been divided in half like this in the lecture hall, it can become lame.

Humor has to look at the audience’s reactions, so rehearsing alone is a high risk. Throw the humor you usually have while eating with your acquaintances or drinking a cup of tea. If the response is good then, you can use it, but if not, you should discard it without regret. When I was a beginner instructor, I used to start teaching like this.

“I have a special talent for telling the funniest stories in the world.”

In itself, the audience significantly lowers the level of expectations for instructors. I don’t think the lecture will be fun. In that state, even if you mix a little humor during the lecture, the audience laughs. When you think you still lack a sense of humor, doing this can be one way.

It is also a good idea for people who are not confident of being funny to properly utilize related videos or materials. In particular, if there is an interesting video related to the subject of the lecture, it will be effective. I still use videos quite useful.

Humor acts as a lubricant.

However, if you use it incorrectly, it may have adverse effects, so you should pay special attention. If you focus too much on humor, you may not remember what the instructor said at all after the lecture, although it was fun to listen to. It should also be remembered that if humor is too frivolous or low-quality, the instructor’s image can fall. Due to the wrong use of humor, the content is good, but it is difficult to make it a poor-quality lecture.

Famous instructors mix humor properly. Even if it is not explosive humor, it must add enough humor to make it fun. Encourage the audience to immerse themselves and listen. Interesting lectures and humorous lectures make even people passing outside the lecture hall stop.
