I had the pleasure of touring Shiloh with Dr. Smith this past April. Was hoping he could relate the story of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher he encountered during his research. Thanks for the great programs and conversation.

Tim, I just bought your book, am 3 chapters in, I have to say it is BRILLIANT the way you detail the vast difficulty of being a cavalry trooper, AND you also even described the “noise” of a cavalry regiment passing by, which is very true, everything on the saddle, etc. made noise.

Also, I have two cousins in the 7th IL Cav, Chandler and Root, both of whom were on Grierson’s Raid, THAT Makes your book even more riveting… it is VERY well written, Clay, York, Maine

Was the vitriol of the northern press (Cincinnati, etc.) against Grant because of the cost of lives at Shiloh, then focusing on his drinking, solely to sell newspapers, or was there another agenda?

I have a shelf load of your books.
